He was a little kid at the time but now, in a professional career that has spanned a better part of 40 years, his love and passion for anything bluegrass and country continues to blossom every season.

Known widely as a picker (guitar, fiddle, bass, banio, mandolin, etc..), band leader, singer, promoter and teacher, Billy performed professionally in Maine for close to thirty years, on both sides of a brief stint serving his country in the United States Air Force. Professionally, he played in North Country Bluegrass, and later joined his dad again. He's played with several other notable New England-based bluegrass bands including the Bluegrass Supply Company, Breakneck Mountain Band, Stan Tyminski and Blue Diamond, The Union River Band, and Anna Mae Mitchell and Rising Tide. He would later go on to manage, teach, and promote the Mueller Family Band.

Billy will be joining a few former band members who are also members of the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame including Ken Brooks, Stan Keach, and Joe Kennedy. Billy's dad and his biggest influence, Sam Tidwell, who passed in 2012, was also a member of the Hall of Fame.

Upon returning to Rhode Island in 2011, Billy helped form the Descendants of Bluegrass, featuring many New England-based second generation bluegrass pickers, as well as forming his own band, the Bill Thibodeau. In 2018, Billy joined the Rock Hearts and helped the band achieve national attention, at festivals, on the radio, and on the charts, lending his versatility on the mandolin, fiddle, lead, tenor and baritone harmonies, as well as on the production side. In 2020, the band was selected by IBMA World of Bluegrass as an official Showcase Band. Later, they signed with Sammy Passamano and The 615 Hideaway Record Label.

He's a 2017 alumnus of the IBMA Bluegrass Leadership Team.

There is so much more to share about Billy Thibodeau, which I'm sure will be elaborated on in the future. For now, thanks to Stan Keach for this information.

Rocking it with Rock Hearts, recently named a new Saga Musical Instruments Mandolin Artist, and now inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame, suffice it to say that Billy is enjoying the fruits of his life long joy for music. If you haven't seen or heard Billy yet, do yourself a favor and catch one of his shows with the Rock Hearts.
Rock Heartstag:rockheartsbluegrass.com,2005:Post/73718262024-03-24T20:22:56-04:002024-03-24T20:22:56-04:00Rock Hearts releases new single, Unfinished Bridges.

Nashville, TN (March 22, 2024) 615 Hideaway Records is pleased to announce new music and the first single “Unfinished Bridges” from Rock Hearts upcoming album Unfinished Bridges coming in 2024.

Written by Mark “Brink” Brinkman and Eric Gnezda, “Unfinished Bridges” is a familiar theme to country and bluegrass music…Love that has fizzled, leaving its stakeholders in the uncharted territory of coming to grips with the fact that the iron bridge that connects the two may not be built to last.

Billy Thibodeau became friendly with Mark “Brink” Brinkman through his involvement with IBMA Leadership and the NAMM shows. Everyone in the band was familiar with Brink’s extraordinary catalog of songs and his six-time IBMA Songwriter of the Year nominations. Through conversation, Brink learned that Rock Hearts were recording and offered a couple song ideas.

Rock Hearts’ Alex MacLeod describes the recording of “Unfinished Bridges”, “Brink and Gnezda’s original delivery were an elemental version, leaving a lot of room for artistic interpretation and license. Rock Hearts was challenged with delivering the song as it was written, but at the same time, rendering it true to the Rock Hearts “style.” The story tells itself nicely with plenty of metaphors and imagery, but the band felt it could use some pep.

When the listener hears the first three fiddle strokes, they’re led to believe it’s going to be a mid-tempo song. But then the band rips into a double-time, while the lyrics are still rendered at a slower pace. The arrangement works beautifully, complimenting the imagery and story line.

Rock Hearts were honored to have recorded a Mark “Brink” Brinkman & Eric Gnezda song and be included in the long and humbling list of successful bands who have covered their music. Feedback from Brink is, ‘We love the cut and hope it will be a big hit for y’all!!’ That’s high praise from such a revered songwriter.”

Produced by Scott Vestal and Rock Hearts and engineer by Scott Vestal, at his Digital Underground Studio, in Greenbriar, Tennessee “Unfinished Bridges” contains performances by Alex MacLeod (Lead Vocals and Guitar), Joe Deetz (Banjo), Billy Thibodeau (Tenor Vocals and Mandolin), Rick Brodsky (Bass) and Austin Scelzo (Fiddle, Baritone Vocals).

For years I watched with some envy as many of my friends moved to Nashville, Boston, NYC, and more. Friends often asked me what kept me in Connecticut, a state not particularly known for its thriving bluegrass and country scene.

We arrived safely on Sunday, got right to work practicing and it's been paying off. Scott has us dialed in and we're cranking. Excited to have contributing songwriters Rick Lang, Bob Amos, Brink Brinkman, and one from our founding mandolin player and Nashville native, Monty McClanahan. Alex and Billy also contribute some originals.

Trying to stay healthy on the road, eating good food, getting rest, and taking care of ourselves. In response, Billy Thibodeau's father and New England Bluegrass pioneer, Sam Tidwell, penned the song about the last log drive on the nearby, Kennebec River, not far from their home in Cambridge, Maine. Sam said the The Last Log Drive was a protest song.

Not long after, as the Associate Press was covering this momentous and historical event in Maine, the song gained similar attention. Billy recalls as a young boy, watching his dad write the song at the family's kitchen table. A few months later, Sam Tidwell and the Kennebec Valley Boys performed the song live on Good Morning America. Though Sam Tidwell passed away several years ago, this song still resonates with the locals in Maine and Rock Hearts wanted to pay homage to Sam Tidwell, to the other pioneers of New England Bluegrass with hopes of keeping this story alive. You can find it on your favorite streaming platform.
Rock Heartstag:rockheartsbluegrass.com,2005:Post/71137112022-11-30T09:52:12-05:002023-03-17T08:01:48-04:00Rock Hearts' WANDERLUST on SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction
In case you haven't heard the big news, our debut single with the 615 Hideaway Record Label, Wanderlust, is now being played on SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction.
ROCK HEARTS SIGNS WITH 615 HIDEAWAY RECORDS

Finishing Debut Album with Ned Luberecki Producing

Nashville, TN (July 28, 2022) – The 615 Hideaway Records is proud to announce the signing of a multi-album deal with Bluegrass emerging band Rock Hearts. Sammy 3, owner of the label, has been friends with the band for over a year helping them distribute their videos through Bluegrass Music-TV with great success. As they say, one thing leads to another, and the conversation turned from helping the group with their video distribution to this exciting signing announcement.

“It was clear after our very first get-together with Sammy3 that he understood us as a group and could relate to our goals and vision for what we want to achieve. What started as a friendly conversation about our band’s dreams, has developed into a mutual respect and admiration between us and Sammy3, with a commitment to working together to accomplish big things! From its inception, Rock Hearts has always felt like family, speaking the same “musical language” and it’s evident that Sammy3 speaks that same language as well. Rock Hearts believes Sammy3 has an exciting vision for 615 Hideaway Entertainment, and we’re honored to be a part of journey with him as we join The 615 Hideaway Records! “ – Alex MacLeod – Rock Hearts

Rock Hearts are currently finishing up their debut album on 615 Hideaway Records with Ned Luberecki producing, and Stephen Mougin engineer extraordinaire at Dark Shadow Recording Studio. It was a winning formula for the band’s first album Starry Southern Nights and the band felt that their second album would again be the right place with these incredible musicians, professionals and all around great human beings.

Formed in 2013, Rock Hearts brings together five veteran musicians from Southern New England who love to sing and pick bluegrass, old Country tunes, and seek out new tunes from other genres to “Bluegrass-ify”.

Watch for news on their first single on 615 Hideaway Records coming soon.

Rock Hearts, southern New England’s fastest rising bluegrass group, has signed a multi-project deal with 615 Hideaway Records in Nashville. The label is run by Sammy Passamano III, son of Sam Passamano of Rural Rhythm Records, and is known in the industry as Sammy3.

Members of the group became friends with Sammy during the 2021 World of Bluegrass Convention in Nashville, which led to them filming and distributing their music videos through 615 Hideaway.

Alex MacLeod, guitarist and lead singer with Rock Hearts, says that joining up with Passamano was a simple decision.

Rock Hearts believes Sammy3 has an exciting vision for 615 Hideaway Entertainment, and we’re honored to be a part of journey with him as we join The 615 Hideaway Records!”

For their first 615 Hideaway album, the band is working once again at Dark Shadow Recording, with Stephen Mougin engineering and Ned Luberecki producing.

In addition to Alex, Rock Hearts is Joe Deetz on banjo, Billy Thibodeau on mandolin, Austin Scelzo on fiddle, and Rick Brodsky on bass.
Rock Heartstag:rockheartsbluegrass.com,2005:Post/69723262022-05-16T14:10:10-04:002023-04-07T10:47:03-04:00Nashville Recording Project #2 is Done!
We are happy to report that our sophomore project has been recorded. In April, we spent a week in Dark Shadow Recording Studio with the dynamic duo of owner and engineer extraordinaire, Stephen Mougin, and producer, Ned Luberecki. The Mougins (Stephen and Yana) are wonderful hosts and have a fabulous studio together!

It was a winning formula for our debut project, Starry Southern Nights, and we were happy as can be that we were able to record our second project with these three incredible musicians, mentors, professionals and all around great human beings.

Our intentions, as they have always been, was to record a high-quality bluegrass project that folks would be excited to listen to. The majority of the tunes are originals with mostly New England-based songwriters, with a couple other contributors from elsewhere. We are beyond thrilled to have a few special guests appearing on our album as well. (Can't say just yet, but folks are gonna love it!)

In a week, we were able to record a complete project complete with originals, straight up bluegrass, instrumentals, gospels, and a classic country cover. We also shot a video at the 615 Studios with Sammy and Sam Passamano.

Got to see, pick and have dinner with our good buddy, Jesse Brock, as well.

In all, it was a very busy, productive, and enjoyable time in the studio and we're excited to share our new material with everyone.

It would not have been possible without the support and generosity of friends and families, crowdfunding contributors, etc... From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!

Rock Hearts is heading back into Dark Shadow Studios with Stephen Mougin to record a new batch of amazing songs written by some of the band members, and Grammy Award nominated and well-known songwriting friends. We are so excited about these songs and cannot wait to share them with you. In our opinion, these new songs take Rock Hearts to a new level, while also preserving our modern/traditional bluegrass style. We could use some help in the process. PLEASE consider our crowdfunding campaign where you can donate and receive the new CD along with other merch. There are donation levels for as little as $20 for the digital download, and higher levels where you can arrange a house concert or even become an honorary executive producer. Consider it all a pre-sale that helps us cover studio costs, mixing and mastering, and CD manufacturing.

Then on Sunday, Feb. 6, we'll be performing at Camp Glen Brook in Marlborough, NH for an afternoon show, 2:00-3:30. It's been several years since Alex MacLeod, front man for Rock Hearts has played in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire. In 1992, as an undergraduate at Keene State College, he joined his very first bluegrass band and it's been an incredible journey ever since. We are looking forward to seeing old friends, making new friends, and enjoying all that is LIVE Music.
Included at the end is the song "Stagger Lee" from Rock Hearts album Starry Southern Nights.

Also, as you heard in the full episode, Alex had the opportunity to play in one of the most well-known New England bluegrass bands of all time, Northern Lights. And to me... it's just such a wonderful thing that he got to be a part of representing Rhode Island in that way. After being a band for 35 years Northern Lights played their last show on March 13th, 2010. At the end of this mini-episode I've included a song from that evening - "Lonesome Road" (audio credit: steveide59) that featured Alex on rhythm guitar and vocals. I hope you enjoy it!

Alex MacLeod, lead singer of the band states, "All of the guys in this band, from the original founding members to the current members, (Monty McClanahan, Pete Kelly, Danny Musher, Joe Deetz), along with newer members Billy Thibodeau and Rick Brodsky, have been the most outstanding people.... not just fabulous musicians, but truly wonderful guys who bring talent and ability and leave their egos at the door...that's been a winning formula for the band and Austin fits the bill perfectly."

Shortly after returning from Nashville, I was sitting in a corner booth of a local restaurant hosting Bluegrass Night. As the band was playing a waltz, I observed an older man walk through the crowd to the dance floor and he began to dance by himself. While others snickered and commented to each other, my heart immediately softened as I started thinking about the old man's "story." Maybe he had too much to drink, maybe it was time for him to head on home, and yet maybe, that was the way of staying connected to the one true love of his life who had departed. I rested on that idea and went home that night to write Starry Southern Nights. Losing someone you love is one of the toughest events to deal with in life. During these unprecedented and difficult times, it's important to keep a soft heart, be slow to judge and take time to get to know other peoples stories.

The fellas in Rock Hearts are so blessed to be able to play the music we love with the people that we love to play it with. As if it were ordained, God put us all together with a mutual respect for the music, with very similar goals, love for the same material.... as Joe says, "We speak the same musical language."

This story is amazing: Joe asks Ned Luberecki to produce the album, Ned says yes but we should use Stephen Mougin...Joe doesn't know Stephen, but Billy T has known Stephen for 30+ years when Billy met a young 10-year old Stephen at a show he was playing... and upon learning young Stephen was a mandolin player, Billy took the mando from around his neck, handed it to young Stephen and essentially said, "Here kid, play me something." Although I hadn't met Stephen in person, he had demo'ed a tune that my buddy, Rick Lang, and I wrote together, so I was familiar with the abundance of talent he possessed.

After arrangements were made and Stephen and Ned were on board to do produce and engineer our debut album, I called Rick Lang to let him know the news. As it turns out, Rick was sitting next to Stephen in Dark Shadow Studios in TN working on his project.

Shortly thereafter, we were in Nashville recording our debut project, Starry Southern Nights.

We were referred to Claire Ratliff at Laughing Penguin Publicity to work with us on letting people know who we were and what we sounded like. Thank you Claire. Your insight and planning have been spot on!!

We were then referred to Bluegrass Today and had the fortune of working with Ashley Lewis. Simply Awesome!

Then we were referred to Shaye Smith who created our 99 Year Blues lyrical video that has had almost 14k views. Love it Shaye!!

Cathy Day wrote an article about us that was featured in Bluegrass Unlimited. Thanks Cathy for your excellent interview and Bluegrass Unlimited for sharing our story with your readers.

Then a friend of Rick Brodsky's, a very gifted artist, Paul, designed the cover art and layout for the CD. Creative beyond creative!!

Then Rick's talented daughter, Zoie, designed the art work for the single, 99 Year Blues.

And with the help of the very patient folks at CD Baby as well as Airplay Direct, we released this single, 99 Year Blues, and it debuted at #14.

Thanks to all... we are the humble recipients of the amazing talents of this village's membership.... and we anxiously await the opportunity to share more bluegrass with you all!
Rock Heartstag:rockheartsbluegrass.com,2005:Post/63985462020-07-31T14:45:09-04:002022-03-23T16:03:46-04:00Stephen Mougin's receives IBMA nod as top #5 2020 Sound Engineer!
So happy for Stephen Mougin who has been nominated as one of the top #5 Sound Engineers for 2020 by the IBMA.

Rock Hearts was thrilled to record our debut project with Stephen at Dark Shadow Studio in Tennessee back in the fall.

Stephen, along with wife, Jana and son, Sammy, are wonderful people to boot and their studio, Dark Shadow Studio, is the ultimate in professionalism, attention to detail, hospitality, and creativity. Having Ned Luberecki as the producer was pretty amazing as well.

Congrats Stephen...much deserved!!
